The club is led by six Flag Officers and five Directors. Other members serve on standing committees. The club has two employees, our Dockmasters, who are on duty Thursday - Monday at specified hours. All other duties are accomplished through the volunteer hours of our members.
GINETTE HUGHES, COMMODORE
Ginette is a relatively new member, but has been very active in the club since she joined in 2005. She has served on Race Committee for three years, including the past year, and was Fleet Captain in 2007-2008. Ginette has sailed her 1974 Mutineer 15 since 1990 but did not consider racing it until she joined the club. The past five years have been spent upgrading her boat and her sailing skills, and she went to the Mutineer Nationals last October. Ginette has crewed on several PHRF boats, including a J27, J28, and Melges 24, and she also has a 1975 Hunter 27, Tequila Sunset. To support her sailing habit, Ginette is employed as the Senior Vice President of Marine Resources Development Foundation/MarineLab, here in Key Largo. When she's ready for a break from being ON the water, Ginette will get IN the water and SCUBA dive with her partner Tom, a PADI Course Director and Captain. |
JOE WORLEY, VICE COMMODORE
Joe is a past Fleet Captain at the club and has been very active in racing since he joined in 1978. He was on the board as a Director in the past year. Joe has raced boats big and small. He and his wife Jean campaigned when the Club had a big Flying Scot fleet, and they now enjoy their 26' Nonsuch, Penguin. As Vice Commodore, Joe is responsible for recruiting new members and encouraging current members. On top of that, he is our current Club Handicapper. In addition to his undoubted talents as a sailor, Joe is an accomplished musician and guitarist. Good thing he's retired! |
LARRY KOENIG, REAR COMMODORE
Larry is a retired Dental Salesman and Vietnam combat veteran. He lives in Key Largo with wife of 26 years, Helen. Larry and Helen enjoy cruising and racing their Nonsuch 30 sailboat, Helen K, when they are not scuba diving, snorkeling or fishing. You can't miss Helen K; she sports a red dolphin on her blue painted bottom. Or is it a blue dolphin on a red bottom? |
CHIP SHORT, FLEET CAPTAIN
Chip has been racing sailboats since he was a teenager. He spent most of his early years sailing keelboats, but one single ride on a Hobie 18 in the 90s converted him to a multihull sailor/racer for life. Chip has competed at more than a dozen national championships in three different classes. He currently sails a Nacra 20 with his wife Barb. Chip is a US Sailing Certified Race Officer as well as a Level II Sailing Coach. While formerly an electrical engineer, Chip is currently living out his dream life as a sailing instructor/Cabana boy at Founders Park in Islamorada. |
BARBARA BAUMAN, TREASURER
Barb and her husband Gary joined the club in 2001, and both have been active on the Board in one way or another. Barb was on the Board last year, and has previously served as Treasurer, so she brings a wealth of experience to the Board. Barb enjoys sailing but seems to have some difficulty getting the time to do it! |
SARA KAHLER, SECRETARY
Sara and her husband Dennis joined the club in 2007 and haven't stopped volunteering since! After a year assisting the Fleet Captain with race committee duties, Sara stepped it up a notch. She was Secretary of last year's Board, and is continuing in that position this year. In addition to taking minutes at each board and general membership meeting, Sara is responsible for all communication with the membership, including special messages from the Commodore, weekly general info emails, and our monthly newsletter Signals. Sara and Dennis enjoy sunset sails aboard their 30' Maine Cat 'Conch Cat.'

PAT MCLAUGHLIN, 2 YEAR DIRECTOR
Pat has served on the board in various positions throughout the years, most recently as Commodore in 2007-2008. He is a past Rear Commodore and Board member, and is currently in the second year of his two-year position on the Board. Pat has crewed on many of the club's PHRF racers, including Melges 24, J27, and J28, and occasionally will get closer to the water (as in IN it) on a JY15. A member since 2002, Pat owns a Hunter 26, JibSea, aboard which his wife Tracey won the women's 2009 PHRF President's Cup race. He is employed by the FAA and is also a guitarist and vocalist. |
JOHN SORENSEN, 2 YEAR DIRECTOR
John has been a member of the Upper Keys Sailing Club from its inception. His father is one of the founding members of the club. Sailing is in his blood, as he learned to sail as a boy on his family's Glander 23, Tequesta, which is the boat he is still sailing today. When not sailing John is a pilot for Delta Airlines, a construction manager for Carlisle Development Group, a Certified Builder Contractor, Landlord, and runs his own company, trenching sewer lines. John lives in the Key Largo with his wife, Anita, and daughter, Callie.

BILL ANDERSEN, DIRECTOR
Bill comes from a racing family, as his dad raced Stars while in college. However, the
first time Bill raced sailboats was while HE was in college, when his family acquired a 1948 Johann Anker Dragon (wooden) with Egyptian cotton sails - a beauty but no speedster! His sailing career has been in fits and starts, interrupted by job and relocation requirements, but it includes sailing a Columbia Sabre, an Islander 36, and a car-top boat when he moved here in 1984. Although he visited the club at that time and met Lee Mielke, his job prevented him from joining until 1986,when he promptly became foredeck for Dave Olsen (foredeck on a Nonsuch?). Bill crewed for Dave often, including at Abaco race week, Miami-Key Largo, and other races. In addition to sailing more often, Bill was elected Treasurer twice and was Commodore during 1992 (the year of Hurricane Andrew) in addition to holding other Board positions over the years. Bill is a CPA and has his own company, Andersen Financial Services, and is active in Rotary. He owns a Catalina 27 Tall Rig, In the Black, bought in 2001, that needed to be lovingly restored after one of the shrouds parted during a race - and we know what happens then! He is very happy to be on the Board again and believes it will be an inducement to start using his sailboat!

ANDY SIKORA, DIRECTOR
Andy and his wife Kim joined UKSC in 2006. Their son Kyle learned to sail at the club and began racing the youth circuit. Andy has done some sailing in small to mid sized cruising sailboats but very little racing until joining the club. After joining, Andy became very involved with youth sailing and eventually became the Director of Youth Sailing for the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program. Working on his predecessors' success, Andy built the program into a year round Opti team competing in youth regattas around the state of Florida. The program is getting better every year. Andy retired from government service at the Miami Air Traffic Control Tower about 2 years ago. He has recently accepted a position teaching at Miami Dade College and tries to balance work, kids and sailing in a very busy day.
