The club is led by six Flag Officers and five Directors. Other members serve on standing committees. The club has two employees, our Dockmasters, who are on duty Thursday - Monday at specified hours. All other duties are accomplished through the volunteer hours of our members.
LARRY KOENIG, COMMODORE
Larry and his wife Helen joined the club in 1999. After a year on the Board, Larry became Rear Commodore for 2010-2011, and was "promoted" to Commodore for this year! Larry is a retired Dental Salesman and Vietnam combat veteran. Larry and Helen enjoy cruising and racing their Nonsuch 30 sailboat, Helen K, when they are not scuba diving, snorkeling or fishing. You can't miss Helen K; she sports a red dolphin on her blue painted bottom. Or is it a blue dolphin on a red bottom? |
LEAH WHITE, VICE COMMODORE |
SARA KAHLER, REAR COMMODORE
Sara and her husband Dennis joined the club in 2007 and haven't stopped volunteering since! After a year assisting the Fleet Captain with race committee duties, Sara stepped it up a notch. She was Secretary for the last two years, and moved "up" again this year to Rear Commodore. Sara is now our Food and Beverage, House and Grounds manager! Sara and Dennis enjoy sunset sails aboard their 30' Maine Cat Conch Cat. Sara and Dennis, along with their dog Chico, won the Helm Award this past year for outstanding Race Committee service. |
CHIP SHORT, FLEET CAPTAIN
Chip has been racing sailboats since he was a teenager. He spent most of his early years sailing keelboats, but one single ride on a Hobie 18 in the 90s converted him to a multihull sailor/racer for life. Chip has competed at more than a dozen national championships in three different classes. This is Chip's second year in a row as Fleet Captain. He currently sails a Nacra 20 with his wife Barb. Chip is a US Sailing Certified Race Officer as well as a Level II Sailing Coach. While formerly an electrical engineer, Chip is currently living out his dream life as a sailing instructor/Cabana boy at Founders Park in Islamorada. |
BILL STANARD, SECRETARY
Bill has been a member since 2008. He served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1970, based in Key West and Vietnam. After the Navy, Bill taught English and Computer Science on and off in public and private schools up until 2000. In addition, he built boats in Newport RI, most recently as Stanard Boat Works in 2000. He was Race Committee Chair and Secretary of Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport. He served on the Race Committee of the New York Yacht Club during the 1983 America’s Cup, and was in charge of setting the windward mark for the Louis Vuitton Challengers Series in the 1980 America’s Cup. Bill moved to Miami in 2003 and has been teaching at Palmer Trinity School. Bill’s hobbies are sailing, wooden boatbuilding and writing. GINETTE HUGHES, TREASURER
Ginette has been very active in the club since she joined in 2005. She is a Past Commodore (2010-2011), served on Race Committee for three years, and was Fleet Captain in 2007-2008. As Treasurer, she is wearing quite a different hat! Ginette has sailed her 1974 Mutineer 15 since 1990 but did not consider racing it until she joined the club. The past five years have been spent upgrading her boat and her sailing skills, and she went to the Mutineer Nationals in 2009 and 2010. Ginette has crewed on several PHRF boats, including a J27, J28, and Melges 24, and she recently sold her 1975 Hunter 27, Tequila Sunset. To support her sailing habit, Ginette is employed as the Senior Vice President of Marine Resources Development Foundation/MarineLab, here in Key Largo. When she's ready for a break from being ON the water, Ginette will get IN the water and SCUBA dive with her partner Tom, a PADI Course Director and Captain. |
