Members of the Month, 2010-2011

Stay tuned for special recognition for members during 2011- 2012!

In 2010-2011, the Commodore designated one individual as Member of the Month. Members of the Month demonstrated the UKSC volunteer spirit consistently, usually in a 'behind-the-scenes' manner! Here are our 2010-2011 Members of the Month. A big THANK YOU goes out to all these members!

CrisCRIS SANDIFER
April 2011

April’s Member of the Month is CRIS SANDIFER, one of our artists-in-residence and a strong support for the UKSC. Cris doesn’t hesitate to share any of her talents, whether it’s providing art as trophies, graphic designs for tshirts, race committee for our special regattas, or whipping up some peas and rice for our suppers! I especially appreciate Cris for the personal support she’s given me through this past year. Being able to bounce ideas off of (or just vent to) a past Commodore like Cris, with her wealth of knowledge and experience as a club member, has really helped me understand and carry out my duties more easily. I also appreciate that she can turn out a t-shirt design practically overnight!

DAVE WHITE
March 2011

The Upper Keys Sailing Club is REALLY very fortunate to have members that donate
their skills to help the club keep our costs down. The volunteer spirit in general in our club is impressive, but on occasion an individual member goes above and beyond! Digging ditches by hand and laying sewer pipe well into the night certainly falls under that category of above and beyond! Dave White is that person and it gives me great pleasure to name him as our March Member of the Month. Dave is a professional plumber and is donating his time to make our lateral connection to the sewer. This connection would have cost us much more without Dave’s generous gift of his time and expertise, along with John Sorensen's donation of his trencher. Dave quietly works behind the scenes, not asking for recognition or thanks. That doesn’t mean he’s shy, though! In addition to his professional plumbing skills, Dave loans his karaoke machine on request, providing great fun and entertainment with his musical and DJ talents. Dave is also an excellent sailor, and loves to share his experience. Out on the
water, Dave is constantly encouraging new sailors and providing lots of great advice, plus he is always willing to help out a member who needs help fixing or fine tuning their boat. Dave is a great asset to our
membership, so next time you see him say “Thanks, Dave!"

DominicDOMINIC MARSDEN
February 2011

Sometimes one person is so instrumental in an individual event that their activity stands head and shoulders above the crowd.  That level of focused activity is why I am naming Dominic Marsden as February’s Member of the Month.

Dominic dove into participating in the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program after his daughters participated in our summer camp last year and suddenly decided that they LIKED to sail.  He chose to focus his organizational and creative talents on the UKSC’s Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Championship Regatta, held just this past weekend here at our club.  Dominic’s drive and Karol’s creativity (at least, I think that’s how it worked) created a dynamic new name, logo and theme for the youth regatta.  The Buccaneer Blast was a tremendous success for the club, attracting many youth sailors from around South Florida, showcasing our own young sailors’ and coach’s talents, and generally featuring the UKSC as a wonderful venue for any sailing event.  To make that happen, Dominic thought of all the small details as well as the big picture.  Dominic marshaled an army of parent and club member volunteers that covered every gap, every requirement that these kids and parents needed to have a safe and fun regatta.

I am sure that all our members will join me in congratulating Dominic Marsden as our February Member of the Month, and thank him for his hard work in making this very large youth regatta into a huge success for the kids, for the parents, for the members, and for the Upper Keys Sailing Club!

Bob BrownBOB BROWN
January 2011

One of our more colorful members has been named January’s Member of the Month! Bobby Brown usually lives on his Endeavor just off the club, so he is obviously at the club a lot of the time. In addition to keeping an eye on the clubhouse and members’ boats, such as alerting people about hatches left open during a rainstorm (um, thanks, Bobby, it dried out very well!), he also does a lot behind the scenes. He serves on our Information Technology Committee and does numerous odd jobs around the club, like installing ceiling fans. Most recently, he turned himself into a Smurf sanding and repainting our pontoon boat. Fleet Captain Chip Short nominated Bob, saying that he is always helping Chip and Rear Commodore Larry Koenig with small jobs around the club. Bobby is a vital part of the rich tapestry of the Upper Keys Sailing Club! Congratulations and thank you for your work to help our club!

Dave HawkinsDAVE HAWKINS
December 2010

Congratulations and thank you to DAVE HAWKINS, our December Member of the
Month! Vice Commodore Joe Worley nominated Dave, citing his committee work this year and in previous years. Just this year, he was on the election committee and is currently serving on the By-Law Committee and the Membership Committee. Dave has been a member for a long time, both as an Associate and a Regular, and is always there to remind you of something in the club history or if clarification is needed on our by-laws. Joe says Dave has been invaluable to him this year. Members like Dave Hawkins, working quietly behind the scenes, are just as important to the club as our more visible volunteers. Thank you, Dave!

Bonnie BONNIE STANFORD
November 2010

Speaking of seeing the same faces at every event, there’s one face
we are sure to see every time: BONNIE STANFORD, our Decorating Queen and November Member of the Month! Sara Kahler nominated Bonnie, who is always on hand to make sure the UKSC is the best-decorated sailing club in the state. Bonnie spends a lot of her time keeping our huge stock of decorations organized, and she spends of lot of her money on those decorations, too! Members like Bonnie make the sailing club a fun, welcome place for all of us. Be sure and say THANK YOU to Bonnie!

LyndaLYNDA MUNSHOWER
October 2010

I am extremely pleased to name LYNDA MUNSHOWER, our Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program Director, as our October Member of the Month! Lynda’s dedication to the youth sailors is amazing and her energy seems boundless. Her enthusiasm and hard work has taken our youth sailing program up a few notches since she took over. I chose Lynda myself because I am absolutely impressed with how much she accomplishes in the little time she has available, between two jobs and her family. Running a full summer camp schedule, doubling our racing team program, trying to stay on top of maintaining sailboats and power boats, and generally just keeping a bunch of kids (and parents) happily sailing is NOT an easy task; Lynda makes it look effortless! Thank you, Lynda, for all your hard work, because I know very well it is NOT effortless!

JohnJOHN McLEOD
September 2010

Congratulations to JOHN McLEOD for being named our September Member of the Month! John is our faithful, tireless columnist who keeps the Upper Keys Sailing Club in the news every week – in a good way, of course! Rear Commodore Larry Koenig nominated John, commenting that
many members rely on his articles to find out what’s going on at the sailing club, and that the column has attracted some new members too! John has been writing our column for YEARS. He is an excellent
example of how volunteerism drives our club forward.

HelenHELEN CREASMAN
August 2010

With great pleasure and gratitude, I announce that our August Member of the
Month is HELEN CREASMAN. Treasurer Barb Bauman nominated her for this distinction, because Helen has been invaluable as Barb’s Audit Committee and also providing training and guidance for our new bookkeeper. Helen is doing everything in her power to ensure a smooth transition
to our new financial system. As our bookkeeper for many years, Helen knows our finances inside and out, so she is perfect for auditing the books. She gives unselfishly of her time and expertise. Helen’s contributions behind the scenes are crucial to the running of our Club.

SharonSHARON BERRY
July 2010

It is with GREAT pleasure that I name Sharon Berry to be 2010’s first Member of the Month! Sharon is always present, always helpful, and gives freely of her time and money to the Club. Rear Commodore Larry Koenig nominated
Sharon, saying how she helps out the minute she walks through the door, whether she’s spelling the bartender so
he could take a break or walking around with a clipboard getting people to sign up for events. Sharon organized and paid for the food for the Spuds & Skewers TGIF, and already has a Sloppy Joe night planned. She donated silverware for our Change of Watch dinner. Sharon’s volunteerism has no limits; we’re as likely to see her on race committee as in the kitchen. She’s set the bar pretty high for subsequent Members of the Month!
