Summer Camp

Opti Racing

Beginner to intermediate sailors who have completed our initial Green Fleet program or who have previous sailing experience are invited to join our racing team. Our racing program will build on their boat handling skills and focus on racing tactics and strategy. The team practices on Sundays from 9:30am to 4pm and on one weekday after school throughout the academic year. Sailors who participate in the racing program should sail with their own boat and equipment. Their boats can be kept at the club at no cost. Participation in away regattas throughout the Fall & Winter/Spring seasons is required. MSYSP usually travels to one regatta per month hosted at various Florida yacht clubs. Parents are expected to assist with loading and unloading boats onto the trailer, providing drinks and snacks for the coach boats and with whatever other regatta logistics may be required.

Parents are required to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours per season or donate an extra $100 to help with the program’s events and fundraising activities.

Mark Rounding

About the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program at the Upper Keys Sailing Club

The Upper Keys Sailing Club has a long history of supporting youth sailing activities. Summer camps and learn-to-sail programs have been offered throughout UKSC's history. One of the Club's members, Hank Gartner, helped spearhead initial support for a youth sailing program and made a formal bequest to the Club to support those activities.

However, it was the untimely passing of Mark Sorensen, who was stricken with cancer at a relatively young age, that helped spur the creation of the Club's youth siling program. As the son of Ken Sorensen, one of the Club's Founders, Mark was a lifelong member and former Commodore of the Upper Keys Sailing Club. He was an accomplished sailor who believed that all youth in the community, regardless of their ability to pay, should be welcomed into the world of sailing.

Upon his passing, father Ken and family made a large donation from Mark's estate, designated to support youth sailing. It was particularly specified in the deed of gift that these monies were not to be intermingled with club operating funds. To facilitate further contributions, the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program was incorporated as a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

The MSYSP depends upon the generosity and volunteer support of the Club's members and the local community at large. Donations are always welcome and sincerely appreciated. The MSYSP is governed by the UKSC Board of Directors and overseen by the Club's current Youth Sailing Director and MSYSP President,Rosa Lamela.
